The structure of the last three years of high school - working through IGCSE and AS-Levels - is explained below.
Examinations
IGCSE
An 18 month course covering Grades 10 – 11, at the end of which a student writes the internationally acclaimed IGCSE Examination.
This is however, not the end of the high-school road. If you or your child intends registering with a South African College or University, they will require a higher qualification than IGCSE, viz. AS-Levels (Grade 12).
AS-Levels
Also covered over 18 months, and which follows IGCSE. It covers Grade 12/Matric,at the end of which a student writes the internationally acclaimed AS-Level Examination, which is recognised by ALL public Universities in South Africa, as well as a number of universities in other countries around the world.
Alternatively after completing IGCSE, instead of completing AS-Levels one can proceed directly to:
A-Levels *
A two-year course commenced after Completing IGCSE; and which covers Grades 12 and 13 (Matric + Post-Matric year – roughly equivalent to first year university in South Africa.)
* Imperial International College is still investigating the option of offering certain subjects at a full A-Level, viz. Grade 13 (Post-Matric).
